Sunday, May 29, 2005- Heavy rains and high winds resulted in a very eventful evening for Tarkington firefighters. Within a span of just a few minutes beginning at app. 18:30, TVFD responded to four calls. The first call was for a tree on a powerline and on fire on Goat Road. Booster 55 responded with one firefighter, but was diverted when it came across a large tree completely blocking SH321 just south of SH105. Booster 55 notified dispatch and stayed on location for traffic control. Engine 54 responded with two firefighters to the SH321 call until Texas Department of Public Safety troopers and Liberty County Sheriff's deputies were on location to handle traffic control. Engine 54 then responded to the initial call on Goat Road. Booster 55 was then sent to a report of power lines dangling close to the roadway on SH321 app. one mile south of FM163. Booster 55 arrived to find power lines app. 8-10 feet above the roadway, dangerously close for any tractor-trailer rigs passing underneath, so Booster 55 stayed at this location until the power company removed the wires. TVFD received a fourth call to assist in diverting traffic around the tree on SH321 by re-routing traffic down FM163 to FM2518 to SH105 and back to SH321. TVFD responded to this call with Rescue 51 with two firefighters. Once the tree on SH321 was removed and traffic on SH321 resumed, Rescue 51 was sent to relieve Engine 54 on Goat Road, which had been standing-by until the arrival of the power company. The last Tarkington units went back in-service around 21:30.
Saturday, May 28, 2005- Tarkington First Responders were called to a possible poisoning involving an 11-month old at app. 11:30. TVFD responded with Rescue 51 with one firefighter.
At app. 13:45, Tarkington First Responders were called to a possible DOA on CR3109. TVFD responded with Unit 502 and Rescue 51 with one firefighter.
At app. 13:55, TVFD was called to a power pole on fire on CR2184 @ CR2189. TVFD responded with Booster 55 with two firefighters, standing by until SHECO arrived on the scene.
Thursday, May 26, 2005- Tarkington First Responders were called to a report of a 4-year old having seizures. TVFD responded with Rescue 51 with two firefighters. Mis-communication added un-necessary minutes to TVFD's response time, sending firefighters down Davis Hill Road (CR2252) when the actual call was in Davis Hill-Big Thicket Estates.
Wednesday, May 25, 2005- Tarkington VFD was called to a car fire on FM1008 @ CR2285 at app. 12:20. TVFD responded with Engine 54 with three firefighters and Booster 55 with one firefighter to find a Dodge Ram pickup fully involved. In the photos below, Captain Dalton Gregory and firefighter Guy Nicholson (both wearing SCBA to protect them from the toxic fumes generated by an automobile fire) work to extinguish the fire. Eventually, foam was used to completely extinguish the blaze.
At app. 22:45, Tarkington First Responders were called to a call for a 31-year old male stabbing victim, responding with Unit 503 and Rescue 51 with three firefighters. At app. 23:15, Tarkington VFD was dispatched to set up a LZ for LifeFlight to transport the stabbing victim. TVFD responded with Engine 54 with five firefighters. Unit 503 and Rescue 51 also responded from the stabbing scene to the LZ to assist.
Monday, May 23, 2005- TVFD was called to a shed fire on CR2284-1 at app. 15:50. The fire was reported by neighbors who heard an explosion. TVFD responded with Engine 54 with three firefighters and Rescue 51 with one firefighter to find the shed fully involved. TVFD called on Cleveland VFD to respond with a tanker and a second alarm for Tarkington to respond with a booster to prevent the fire from spreading in the woods. The shed housed various "hot-rodding" supplies, including camshafts, intakes, and heads, as well as several propane and nitrous oxide bottles, several of which exploded during the fire. In the photos below, Captain Dalton Gregory and firefighter Frank Green work to extinguish the shed fire. Tarkington firefighters wear SCBA on all structure fires.
